Dr. Daesub Song, professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University, is an internationally recognized expert in animal virology, viral pathogenesis, and vaccine development. Trained at Seoul National University (DVM 2000, PhD in veterinary microbiology 2004), he built his career across industry, government research, and academia before returning to his alma mater in 2022. His work centers on three fronts: the interspecies transmission of viruses at the animal-human interface, the development of viral vaccines from bench through clinical trial and registration, and rapid field diagnostics built on nanomaterial platforms. He commercialized the world's first oral porcine epidemic diarrhea virus vaccine capable of inducing mucosal immunity in piglets, and his discovery of avian-origin influenza transmission to dogs established the dog as a potential mixing vessel for influenza — a finding that reshaped influenza surveillance priorities worldwide. More recently he has led preclinical evaluation platforms for COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics, characterized highly pathogenic H5N1 in companion animals, and tracked the emergence of recombinant African swine fever virus across Asia. He served on the MERS-CoV Korea/WHO joint mission team in 2015 and has held board positions with the Korea Society for Zoonoses and The Korean Vaccine Society since 2016. His contributions have been recognized with the Minister of the Interior and Safety Award (2018) and the Minister of Health and Welfare Award (2021). He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and holds more than twenty patents in viral vaccines and diagnostics.
