Wang Hongning is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Chief Scientist of the Biology discipline under the "Double First-Class" initiative, and a professor and doctoral supervisor at Sichuan University. She serves as a member of the Discipline Appraisal Group for Biology and Bioengineering of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and as an academic advisor of the Chinese Association of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine.

She is principally engaged in frontier, interdisciplinary basic and applied research on the prevention and control of epidemic diseases in swine and poultry. She pioneered a three-dimensional, integrated theory and methodology of biosafety prevention and control for livestock and poultry epidemic diseases that is "whole-chain, traceable, and predictable." Her achievements have been applied across the major swine- and poultry-producing regions of China, establishing a new paradigm for the biosafety-based prevention and control of bacterial diseases in the country's swine and poultry industries.

She has led projects under the National "863" and "973" Programs, key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and key projects under the Regional Innovation Fund, among others, and has served as Chief Scientist of the National Key Research and Development Program during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. She has published over 300 papers as first or corresponding author in leading domestic and international academic journals, chief-edited 12 monographs, and spearheaded the formulation of 11 national and local standards. She has been awarded two Second-Class Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and six First-Class Prizes of provincial/ministerial-level Science and Technology Progress Awards.

Her honors include the National Innovation and Pioneering Award (2023); the National March 8th Red-Banner Pacesetter (2022); the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award (2013); selection under the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten-Thousand Talents Project and recognition as a National Young and Middle-Aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions (2013); the title of National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker (2012); and service as a Delegate to the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (2002).
